Some of the feelings I associate with yoga:
Strength and softness
Fluidity and ease
Calmness and clarity
Energy and vitality
Purely and simply, the yoga I teach is to help keep joints mobile, release tight muscles and fascia (connective tissue), improve posture, improve sleep, boost the immune system, alleviate stress, improve lung function, increase body awareness, sharpen concentration, boost confidence.
No crazy, dangerous wrapping your body into pretzel-like knots - just working within your own limitations - not competing with anyone else, and most importantly, not competing with yourself.
Yoga can help alleviate chronic pain, (such as lower back pain, and arthritis) tension headaches, neck and shoulder strain, managing stress, lower blood pressure.
You can start yoga at any age, any fitness level, any size. Yoga is helpful whether you are a professional athlete or a couch-potato - there are modifications or alternatives to almost any pose. You and your body will be treated as an individual - each pose can be adapted to work for your body.
Through a regular yoga practice, you can create space in the body and mind which allows all your mental and physical functions to work more efficiently and therefore instil a sense of wellbeing and clarity of thought.
I asked some of my yoga students why they did yoga - I got various answers - improved sleep, sense of calm, relaxation, keeping the joints mobile, but most often the answer I got was "it just makes me feel better".
